THE IKULU PEOPLE

Preserving Our Heritage — United in Akulu Land

Who We Are

We are the Bakulu — widely known as the Ikulu people — a proud and peaceful ethnic community rooted in the fertile lands of Southern Kaduna State, Nigeria. Our homeland is called Akulu, located primarily in Zangon Kataf, Kachia, and Kauru Local Government Areas. We have lived on this land for centuries, nurturing our culture, language, and traditions with unwavering devotion.

Our Language & Identity

We speak Kulu (Ikulu), a distinct language belonging to the Plateau branch of the Benue-Congo language family. It is the heartbeat of our identity — spoken in homes, markets, and ceremonies by over 100,000 people. To be Ankulu is to carry the language, the land, and the ancestors wherever we go.

Our Land & Economy

Akulu is blessed with rolling hills and rich soil. We are historically and predominantly farmers. Our people cultivate yams, maize, millet, guinea corn, and especially ginger — a crop that has become a source of livelihood and pride for many households. We also keep livestock, engage in local trade, and value the produce of the land as a gift from the Creator.

Culture & Traditions

Our culture is alive in our songs, dances, festivals, and oral history passed down from generation to generation. We cherish our communal way of life — where elders guide the community, and neighbors stand by one another in peace and hardship. Our traditional ruler is the Agwom Akulu, and our society is built on respect, unity, and shared responsibility.
